Interesting facts about guinea pigs 

Guinea pigs are full of interesting little quirks, and even experienced owners are often surprised by how much there is to learn about them. From the foods they enjoy to how long they can live, cavies have some unique traits that make them both fascinating and rewarding to care for.

Food preferences start early

Guinea pigs learn what is considered food and not food during the first 10 days of life. This means that the foods they are exposed to as young piglets are often the foods they are happiest to eat throughout their lives. For that reason, it is a good idea to introduce piglets to a reasonable range of suitable foods while they are young. When they are later weaned and go off into new homes, they are more likely to recognise familiar foods, settle in well, and thrive.

This is also why one person may say, “My guinea pig loves that,” while another says, “Mine won’t touch it.” Early food experiences can make a real difference.

Guinea pig litters can be surprisingly large

The largest recorded guinea pig litter contained twelve piglets. While that is an exceptional number, it shows how much litter size can vary. At the other end of the scale, piglets born weighing less than 50 grams rarely survive, as such a low birth weight can make those early days much harder.

Guinea pigs can live longer than many people expect

The oldest recorded cavy is said to have lived to 14 years and 10 months. His name was Snowball, and he was owned by M A Wall of Bingham, Nottinghamshire. While this is a very unusual age for a guinea pig, it is a reminder that with good care, cavies can be cherished companions for many years.

Guinea pig teeth grow throughout life

Unlike human teeth, a guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously throughout its life. This is one of the reasons why a good diet, especially one with plenty of quality hay, is so important. Chewing fibrous foods helps wear the teeth down naturally and supports healthy dental function.
