Clipping Guinea Pig Nails

How to Clip Guinea Pig Nails

Clipping your guinea pig’s nails is not a difficult job, but it is an important part of regular cavy care. Keeping nails trimmed helps your guinea pig stay comfortable and can also be an important part of show preparation. Overgrown nails can become uncomfortable and harder to manage over time, so regular trimming is a good habit to maintain.

Choosing the Right Clippers

The best tools for trimming guinea pig nails are small dog or cat nail clippers or flat human nail clippers. These are easier to control and help give a cleaner cut. Scissors are not recommended, as they can split the nails rather than trim them properly.

Take care not to trim too high

In guinea pigs with white or clear nails, you can usually see the pink area inside the nail, known as the quick. This is the part you should avoid cutting into. In guinea pigs with dark nails, this is harder to see, so it is best to trim only a small amount at a time. If your guinea pig squirms just as you begin to press the clippers, it may be a sign that you are too high up the nail.

Tips for Beginners

When you are first learning to clip nails, it can help to have another person hold the guinea pig upright with its bottom supported in their hand. This gives you both hands free to work more confidently and carefully. With a little practice, nail clipping becomes much easier and quicker to do.
